Design Iterations for Feature Enhancements and Feature Continuity for the MTR Mobile App

with more than 7.1 million downloads and 1.35 million daily active users

The MTR is the main public transport network serving Hong Kong. Launched in May 2020, the new and improved MTR mobile app deploys new and enhanced features to create better transport, lifestyle and rewarding journeys for users. Users can not only view real-time service status and route suggestions, but also accumulate points from daily travel, shopping and dining.

How I work:

The agency where I worked was the primary design and development service provider for the MTR mobile app. I closely collaborated with the MTR product team to brainstorm and design new features, conduct tests, and make design changes that would improve user experience.

Although I was not directly involved in the product discovery process due to the agency's working format, I took the initiative to create detailed user journeys based on clients' requirements. This ensured that the clients and our product team were aligned from the early stages. I also created prototypes and raised questions about new designs and features for clients to review and test with their users. The feedback and insights gathered would then influence the final design to ensure the best user experience.

Projects I have worked on:

During my time working on the MTR Mobile app, I contributed to the development and enhancement of several features.

I played a role in enhancing the overall trip planning and ticket purchase experience by streamlining existing features and integrating them into a seamless flow. This allowed users to easily determine the best route based on their needs and access relevant real-time information before and during their journey.

Additionally, I was involved in designing the new ticket purchase feature and the real-time bus and light rail journey feature for the app. These features greatly improved the travel experience of commuters by providing transparent route details, next train information, and fare details for MTR bus and light rail services.

I also collaborated with a product designer at MTR to create a scalable design system with well-documented guidelines. This system could be shared with other agencies for potential future projects. At the same time, I partnered with front-end developers to implement the design system and enhance overall accessibility. Users had provided feedback that it was easier to find the information they need, and the readability has significantly improved.
